Google is actively investigating reports of Pixel 2 XL display burn

24 October 2017

Google is "actively investigating" claims that the Pixel 2 XL has a screen burn-in issue. The screen uses a technology called POLED, which stands for "plastic organic light emitting diodes", and some users have been complaining about its boring color reproduction and alleged blue tint. The handset's navigation buttons can be seen hanging around at the bottom against a white navigation bar background, with the active display itself featuring a grey image.

Even as this complaint was being made by buyers, some buyers complained that the Google Pixel 2 XL makes images look tiresome and dreary when the smartphone's default settings were activated.

Google stated it is looking into the problem: "The Pixel 2 XL screen has been designed with an advanced POLED technology, including QHD+ resolution, wide color gamut, and high contrast ratio for natural and lovely colors and renderings". We aren't sure which of the two companies is handling final shipments, but regardless there's a level of accountability when the phones are being branded as "Made by Google". At this point, however, most signs point toward screen burn-in on the Pixel 2 XL.

Google has admitted that they are actively investigating problems with the Pixel 2 XL display.

If you're planning to pick up a Pixel 2, we'd hold off until Google clarifies this situation. Image retention isn't as bad, but it wouldn't be a permanent issue like screen burn-in. Having screen burn-in this severe after just seven days of use is worrisome - typically it affects OLED displays after months or even years of constant use. However, when the similar Questions was forwarded to the Google spokesperson, here are the official statements from the same. Google isn't going to leave every single phone running for hours to test burn-in, when it can take 7-10 days for the problem to appear. Just like Samsung or Apple, Google too, has attractive cases made from genuine leather.

A post by Android Police's Alex Dobie clearly shows that the soft navigation buttons have burnt-in to the OLED display after just one week and since it was first reported, other (mostly journalists) have said the same.
