Background checks for guns purchases set Black Friday record

Shoppers hunting for Black Friday deals seemed to include a record number of those in the market for firearms; the Federal Bureau of Investigation says it fielded 203,086 background check requests for gun purchases on the day after Thanksgiving - the highest daily total ever, reports USA Today.

USA Today reports that the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) received 203,086 requests for background checks, a significant increase from the previous single-day record of 185,713 requests-set a year ago on Black Friday. That number is likely higher, because a single buyer can obtain several guns in a single transaction.

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would bring in customers on Black Friday and boost recently flagging sales.
