Mueller Investigating Flynn's Role in Alleged Plot to Deliver Cleric to Turkey

12 November 2017

Under the alleged proposal, Mr. Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr., were to be paid as much as $15 million for delivering Fethullah Gulen to the Turkish government, according to people with knowledge of discussions Mr. Flynn had with Turkish representatives.

Trump also ignored advice from President Barack Obama, who fired Flynn as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, to steer clear of Flynn.

The discussions between Flynn and Turkish government reps "involved the possibility of transporting Mr. Gulen on a private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating an alleged plan involving former White House National Security Adviser Mike Flynn to forcibly remove a Muslim cleric living in the US and deliver him to Turkey in return for millions of dollars, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Gulen has lived in a compound in rural Pennsylvania since 1999 after coming to the US for health reasons, though the regime of Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan has continuously made him a bête noire and blames him for a failed coup last summer.

In September, the Wall Street Journal reported that Rohrabacher offered Trump a deal that to protect Julian Assange, creator of WikiLeaks, which released emails damaging to Hillary Clinton ahead of the 2016 election, from legal peril.

He is believed to be under investigation for not registering as a foreign agent, a charge leveled at former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an indictment from Mueller.

After Trump took office, Flynn served as national security adviser for 24 days before being forced to resign for misleading White House officials about his contacts with Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak.

The Wall St Journal reported that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have asked at least four individuals about a meeting in mid-December in which Flynn and a representative from the Turkish government discussed putting Gulen on a private jet and carting him off to the Turkish prison island of Imrali.

The focus of Mueller's investigation is to examine whether a discussion at 21 Club in NY leading to a deal to transport the cleric to Turkey would have resulted in Flynn receiving millions of dollars in secret payments, and whether Flynn was, in fact, part of that discussion.

Lawyers for Mr Flynn labelled the allegations "outrageous" and "false".

While he may have been a voice during the 2016 campaign, the revelation that Flynn gave incomplete information as national security adviser cost him his position in the White House.

Special counsel Mueller's ability to gather enough evidence to make the charges stick could lead to Flynn making a plea bargain in exchange for cooperation on the Russia-related investigations.
