New Year's Eve terror attack foiled, man arrested

A 20-year-old Australian man was arrested for his alleged plan to carry out a terror attack on New Year's Eve in Melbourne.

"What we will be alleging is that he was intending to use a firearm to shoot and kill as many people as he could", Victoria Police deputy commissioner Shane Patton said on Tuesday.

Victoria and Australian Federal Police tracked Ali Khalif Shire Ali and said he planned to shoot "as many people as he could" in an attack in Melbourne's CBD.

Police will provide more detail in a press conference later this morning.

The arrest is not linked to any previous raids or terror arrests, police said.
