Suspect in Rand Paul assault pleads not guilty

According to The Washington Post, 59-year-old Rene Boucher allegedly attacked his neighbor, the Kentucky senator, on Friday in Paul's yard, breaking at least six of his ribs.

Boucher, the Republican senator's neighbor, is charged with fourth-degree assault causing minor injury, for which he faces up to a year in jail if convicted.

Earlier this week, U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Paul would return next week. While he did not witness the incident, Skaggs has said Boucher and Paul have been quibbling over lawn maintenance for years.

"The unfortunate occurrence of November 3 has absolutely nothing to do with either's politics or political agendas", Baker told Fox News.

"Last week, Sen. Paul was vigorously assaulted by someone in his neighborhood", Stafford said.

In an interview after the court appearance, Dr. Boucher's attorney Matt Baker said that "we should believe" Jim Skaggs when pressed for a motive for the attack on the senator. "Anyone claiming otherwise is simply uninformed or seeking media attention".

Warren County prosecutor Amy Milliken didn't provide any more details but said her office is working with Kentucky State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Boucher is next due in court November 30 for a pre-trial hearing.

Paul tweeted about his injuries Wednesday, sharing the news about his broken ribs and adding that he had a pleural effusion, which is an accumulation of fluid resulting from inflammation or changes in pressure in the chest.

According to the Bowling Green Daily News, Boucher is an anesthesiologist and pain specialist, and Boucher's attorney's statement noted that he and Paul worked together when they "were both practicing physicians".

Boucher's lawyer said Monday that the attack was "a very regrettable dispute" that was "trivial".

Paul suffered six broken ribs in the incident.

A Paul friend told The Associated Press that the senator was tackled from behind and slammed to the ground Friday.
