Was Padmavati controversy created only for publicity? Bhansali grilled by MP panel

Earlier Supreme Court criticised those holding power or public offices who have commented about Padmavati while it is still pending before the Central Board of Film Certification.

The film was supposed to be released on December 1 but the makers have deferred it indefinitely.

Actor Nana Patekar on Thursday said threats to actress Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali regarding the release of their controversial film "Padmavati" are "wrong and unacceptable".

The BJP MP also said, "There have been instances in the past where controversy has been created around films just to ensure extra publicity for them". However, the whole movie was shot in 2D, but the makers have made a decision to convert the movie into a 3D after they got a positive feedback on the 3D trailer.

The head of the panel, Anurag Thakur said that this controversy is coming from various Rajput groups and political parties which have even accused the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali because they believe that he has distorted the history in the movie by showing the romantic dream sequence between Rani Padmini and Muslim Sultan Allauddin Khilji.

Many historians are unconvinced that Padmavati actually existed.

The judges reiterated that it is the prerogative of the national censor board to review the film and make a decision on whether it is suitable for screening.

Censor board Chairman Prasoon Joshi appeared before a parliamentary panel to brief members about the controversy over "Padmavati" and said the film had not yet been approved.
