British Woman Sentenced To Three Years In Egyptian Prison

27 December 2017

A British woman has been jailed for three years in Egypt after she was accused of bringing almost 300 painkiller tablets into the country, her family has said.

Laura Plummer was arrested in October after being found with 290 tramadol pills in her suitcase.

The 33-year-old claimed she didn't know the tramadol tablets she was caught with were illegal and had taken them for her Egyptian lover Omar Caboo's bad back.

Christmas Day is a normal working day in the Islamic country, and the shop assistant from Hull appeared in the dock handcuffed.

"We're just hoping. Even half of that would be better - anything less than three years".

She said she looked "unrecognisable".

Her family said she was "sleep deprived", "visibly nervous" and "upset" to the extent that the presiding official had to call a halt to proceedings.

Her Christmas Day court appearance was thought to be the beginning of her trial but the case has now been adjourned until tomorrow.

"I just can't believe it, she couldn't do three months, now it's three years", Roberta Sinclair, Ms Plummer's mother, told the Telegraph.

Her lawyer told Sky News that the idea she was a drug trafficker was illogical as she made no attempt to hide what she was transporting.

Her legal team are to put in a bail application that could see Laura freed from the detention centre where she has been since October 9. "That's her life. She's a normal person".

An appeal will not be heard for at least 60 days.

Her family had been told that she could face up to 25 years in jail, with one lawyer even mentioning the death penalty.

He said: "Apparently something was lost in translation, the defence lawyer wasn't confident that Laura was understanding the questions first of all, and the interpreter wasn't correctly translating what Laura was saying in her answers".

Since then, she said, her daughter has been "living in hell" sharing a jail cell with no beds with up to 25 other women.
