Bolivia Slams US 'Clumsiness' at UNSC Meeting On Iran Protests

08 January 2018

Demonstrations were quickly backed by Iran's main global detractors: the U.S., Israel. "It is a powerful exhibition of courageous people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest".

But US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, was defiant. "The world will be watching what you do", Haley told a meeting of the UN Security Council.

"The Iranian people are rising up in over 79 locations throughout the country", Haley said.

"We will not be quiet", she told the meeting. It has been opposed by Trump who has to certify this month to the US Congress that Iran is complying with it in order for Washington to continue with the terms of the agreement.

Once again, the USA and the media are interfering with internal Iranian affairs. Envoys from several other countries, from China to newcomer Equatorial Guinea, expressed reservations about whether the council was the right forum for the issue.

There was room to play a better game because we didn't play well for 90 minutes. "Good opportunity for the club to buy this player".

"However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute per se a threat to global peace and security", Ambassador Francois Delattre said.

"This is nothing but another desperate attempt by the United States administration to escape, as it has lost every shred of moral, political and legal authority and credibility in the eyes of the whole world", he said. He pointed out that Trump has a history of making "belligerent" comments about Iran.

"Given the history of past US involvement in Iranian domestic politics, the best thing for the United States would be to continue to do little to intervene or directly support these protests", Dan Mahaffee, senior vice president and director of policy at the Center for the Study of Congress and the Presidency, told Xinhua.

Earlier in the week, the USA government announced it was suspending security assistance to the country.

The president's tweets have not called for violence or disruptive acts, but he has commended them.

He also has described Iran as "failing at every level" and declared it is "TIME FOR CHANGE!"

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif pointed to Mr. Trump's own previous comments voicing support for the Iranian people, saying the US leader had an "odd way of showing "such respect" for Iranians".

"The UNSC rebuffed the US' naked attempt to hijack its mandate". "Another FP (foreign policy) blunder for the Trump administration", he wrote.

In a second statement on January 1, Rouhani plays down the protests as "nothing" and insists the Iranian people will "respond to rioters and lawbreakers". The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
