Kenya Placed Under Second-Tier in New US Travel Advisory System

13 January 2018

The U.S. State Department updated its warning system and how it conveys information about the risks of traveling to other countries, in a bid to make these warnings easier to understand.

The United States has issued a new travel advisory for its citizens, ranking nations safety from Level 1 to Level 4, depending on how safe the nation is to be travelled to.

In a new travel advisory to its citizens, the United States has asked them to reconsider travelling to Pakistan due to terrorism.

Ranking Pakistan on Level 3, the State Department asked Americans to reconsider travel to this country due to terrorism. "In the past, there have been large-scale terrorist attacks resulting in hundreds of casualties", the State Department advisory said.

On Tuesday, US senators heard State Department officials say someone known to the Cuban government has a mystery weapon that they use to cause brain trauma to Americans in Havana.

But Cuba is ranked only level three, "Reconsider Travel".

Level 4 - Do Not Travel: This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.

It also added that the USA government has "limited ability" to provide emergency services to its citizens in rural areas of eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana through western West Bengal, where Maoist extremist groups are present, since they require special authorization to visit. The tiers are based on the level of crime, terrorism, civil unrest and more.

Moving forward, every country will be given a level ranging from one, being almost no risk; to level four, a do not travel warning. U.S. has been ranked as the highest source of tourists to Kenya.

The advisory issued by the State Department categorised over dozen countries in terms of threat level with Pakistan occupying Level 3, the second last level in terms of danger. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory.

The arch-nemesis of world's superpower, North Korea is also in Level Four, with the additional restriction that U.S. law prohibits American travellers from using their passports there, effectively banning visits to the Kim led-state.

The revised system assigns levels of advice (1 to 4) about travel as it pertains to every country. Antarctica is also a level 2, for "environmental hazards posed by extreme and unpredictable weather", according to the State Department.
