An American man, 26, was arrested in Nara Prefecture on Thursday on suspicion of confining the missing 27-year-old woman from Sanda, Hyogo Prefecture, in an apartment in Osaka's Higashinari Ward he was using as a vacation rental, investigative sources said.
The man, who lives in NY, had arrived as a tourist in Osaka in January, the Asahi Shimbun daily reported. According to BBC, "The woman is believed to have visited another apartment in the western Osaka prefecture with the suspect earlier in February".
The Daily Mail indicates the head was found inside of a suitcase.

The victim is a 27-year-old woman who was not identified by name in local news reports.
The evidence in the case includes surveillance video.
Security camera footage shows the woman boarding an Osaka-bound train alone at a nearby station.

According to the Washington Post, additional CCTV footage shows her entering the building in which Bayraktar had rented a unit on Feb 16; there is no footage of her leaving. The mother of the woman contacted police on February 17 after her daughter's company said that she failed to arrive at work. No clothes or any other belongings of the woman have yet been found.
She was reported missing on February 17, two days after friends last heard from her.
Before the discovery of the head, the suspect was being questioned on accusations he may have locked the woman in an apartment - again, accusations he denies.
