Rescuers fearless aftershocks as bodies pulled from teetering Taiwan tower

Meanwhile, 600 military personnel and more than 750 firefighters combed through rubble and helped with rescue efforts, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Center.

According the Central Emergency Operation Center, nine people have died, 62 are missing and 266 were injured as a result of Tuesday's (Feb. 6) magnitude 6.0 quake.

Bridges and some highways were closed pending inspections. Residents were directed to shelters where they were provided with food, water and a place to sleep.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it had received no requests for consular assistance following the quake. According to Taiwan News , a swarm of earthquakes struck eastern Taiwan over the past several days.

MECO chief Angelito Banayo said the missing Filipina, Melody Albano Castro, is employed as a caretaker in an nursing home for the elderly at the devastated city of Hualien. However, Hualien's airport runway was intact and rail links appear to be unaffected.

The tremor struck 22km northeast of Hualien at a depth of 1km at 11:50pm local time, the US Geological Survey said on Tuesday.

Taiwan is located within the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", an area known for its intense seismic activity. Many people remain stuck in the bottom two floors. Five people involved in the construction of the complex were later found guilty of negligence and given prison sentences.

The island's worst tremor in recent decades was a 7.6-magnitude quake in September 1999 that killed around 2 400 people.
