Germany's Felix Loch faltered on his final run, allowing Austria's David Gleirscher to move from second into first place and Chris Mazdzer from fourth to second. You can see the full results here.

However, his teammate Chris Mazdzer won the silver medal, becoming the first USA male luge athlete to win a singles medal in the Olympics.

"It's 16 years in the making (and) what you dream about as a young child and 20 years later you're finally on the podium", the 29-year-old said. "I've had a rough last two years, and it just shows: Don't ever give up". Mazdzer finished both the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games in 13th place.

Loch set the tone with the first run of the day with a course record (that record was broken by Mazder moments later). He conquered the infamous ninth curve easily to put himself into flawless position for a medal.

West, who was 18th overall following the first two runs, had hoped to move up in the final standings on Sunday.

"I like being the underdog", he told USA Today earlier.

It's no surprise, Mazdzer's second run was the fastest in that heat demonstrating he was capable of medaling.

Mazdzer, who describes himself as a goofball who knows how to flip the switch to serious when he needs, beamed after crossing the finish line.

Germany has long dominated the sport of luge, not only earning the most total medals across all events but also winning the most medals in each individual category: women's singles, men's singles, doubles, and relay, which was introduced in the last winter Olympics in Sochi.

Taylor Morris, of South Jordan, Utah, finished 18th in his first Olympic appearance, while Tucker West, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, took 26th.

The Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games are now off to a rousing start for the American squad, which transitions to the women's singles race on Monday and Tuesday nights.
