The nation's top intelligence official says the Trump administration is getting ready to slap new sanctions on Russians over Moscow's meddling in the presidential election.

"Certainly there was meddling and probably there was meddling from other countries and maybe other individuals", he said.

Despite claims that Moscow seeks to influence the 2018 midterm election, US President Donald Trump insisted no foreign power would materially damage the integrity of the US electoral process.

While critics have said the administration has not done almost enough to confront the Russian threat, Trump said that "we are doing a deep study and coming out with some very strong suggestions on the '18 election" in November.

"One of the things we're learning is it's always good - it's old-fashioned - but it's always good to have a paper backup system of voting", Trump said. Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committee member Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., asked Coats on Tuesday.

"It is a whole of government approach, I have discussed it personally with the President of the United States and he has said I assume you are doing your jobs", Coats said.

Last week, Trump unexpectedly announced tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports. "I like conflict. I like having two people with two points of view", Trump said during the Tuesday presser. He touted the GOP-crafted tax overhaul law, regulations his administration has terminated, and the "many, many (conservative) judges going on to the bench" across the country.

Trump said, "We'll have to see".

America's oldest allies in Europe, however, should expect much different treatment from the US president.

Trump also doubled down on the idea that the situation with North Korea should have been handled years ago.

Trump shared the stage Tuesday with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and, as is traditional, each leader called on two journalists. He spoke highly of old-fashioned paper ballots as tough to hack and said he would counteract whatever Russian Federation tries to do.

Last month, Mueller indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian organizations, alleging that they worked to sow discord in the US and interfere in the election by waging "information warfare" through social media and other sophisticated tactics. "They came out, they went to the Olympics, they went in very good spirit".

The president also commended North Korea's presence at the recent Winter Olympics. He said Sweden, which has an embassy in Pyongyang, is willing to help the United States and other "key actors" in negotiations.

'I took a lot of heat on Sweden, ' Trump said.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told lawmakers Trump was trying to balance protections for beleaguered steel and aluminum producers while "making sure that we don't do undue harm to the economy".
