Bill Cosby guilty of sexual assault, jury rules as trial ends

27 April 2018

Tom Mesereau, lawyer for actor and comic Invoice Cosby, arrives for Cosby's sexual assault trial on the Montgomery County Courthouse, Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in Norristown, Pa.

His first case ended in a mistrial last June. According to the Associated Press, Cosby could be sentenced to up to 10 years for each of the three charges, but will likely receive a shorter sentence that could nonetheless put him in prison until his death.

Prosecutors asked the judge to take Cosby into custody, saying he had a private plane and could fly anywhere in the world, but the request was denied.

Cosby, now 80, was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in his Pennsylvania home in 2004. He claimed the encounter with Constand, then a Temple University basketball staffer, was consensual.

The judge decided Cosby can remain free on $1 million bail while he awaits sentencing but restricted him to Montgomery County, where his home is.

Prosecutor Stewart Ryan urged the jurors to face with Constand and look Cosby within the eye and "inform him the reality about what he did". "She was the first courageous person who stood up in public and went to authorities and said, 'Bill Cosby drugged and raped me'". In a two-hour, tag-team closing argument, Cosby's attorneys, Mesereau and Kathleen Bliss, painted Constand as a "pathological liar" scheming for a giant payday. Constand got a civil settlement of almost $3.4 million from Cosby.

It took the jury 14 hours of deliberations over the course of two days to come back with the verdict.Upon hearing the verdict, Cosby lashed out at District Attorney Kevin Steele calling him an A**HOLE immediately after the DA asked that Cosby be confined immediately.

Cosby's attorneys said they were disappointed by the verdict and planned to appeal.

That concept became the song " Three Is a Magic Number " and the project would become the Grammy-nominated Multiplication Rock . Dorough wrote and directed episodes of Schoolhouse Rock! from 1972 to 1996, and for direct-to-video releases in 2002 and 2009.

The star witness for the defense was Marguerite Jackson, Temple employee who testified that Constand once spoke of setting up a prominent person and suing.

Cosby's lawyers also suggested to jurors that the incident could not have happened the way she said it did, even hinting that there is a chance Cosby was not in the Philadelphia area around the time Constand said she was assaulted. In addition, five other women testified that Cosby had drugged and then assaulted them decades ago as prosecutors sought to prove Cosby's actions toward Constand were part of a pattern.

Another prosecutor, Kristen Feden, said Cosby was "nothing like the image that he played on TV" as sweater-wearing, wisdom-dispensing father of five Dr. Cliff Huxtable on "The Cosby Show".

The defense argued that Constand had concocted an elaborate extortion plot, that she was a master manipulator who lied about sexual assault in the hopes of a big payoff.
