Intel announces first ever Core i9 processor for laptops

04 April 2018

The high-performance Core i9 processor is part of Intel's eighth generation product lineup, which comes with an integrated software that addresses the Spectre and Meltdown security flaws revealed in January. Now, last year's rumor has turned out to be true, and Intel has announced the 8th Gen Core i9 processors for laptops, along with Core i7, Core i5, and Core i3 chips.

Moving on from the Core i9 - Intel's new 28W chips all feature higher-end EDRAM graphics solutions with 128MB of EDRAM.

The new family of eigh generation Intel Core processors is aimed at gamers and content creators, Intel said, and allows computers to perform 88 percent better than a three-year old PC and 29% better than the firm's seventh-generation processors.

Real Madrid are in Turin for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, which sees a repeat of last season's final. Sitting in third place and 13 points behind leaders Barcelona , the La Liga title looks out of reach.

Intel announced the first Core i9 8th-generation chips for laptops today. There's also support for Intel Optane memory to ensure accessing storage doesn't form a performance bottleneck regardless of whether you pair it with an SSD or hard drive. The company is announcing new mobile and desktop CPUs as well as its new Intel 300 Series chipsets.

Well, Intel launched the Core i9 processor for laptops at an event in Beijing, rather than in the U.S., which presumably reflects China's continuing challenge to USA domination in the world. The new processors feature up to six cores, which is a first for the company's mobile lineup. It has six cores and 12 threads and can automatically overclock itself based on temperature of the processor.

While base clock speed of 2.9 gigahertz and single-core Turbo Boosts speeds up to 4.8 gigahertz, the Core i9 is way more processor than most consumers will ever need.

Each of these new Coffee Lake chips also supports Intel's new Optane memory, which it says can increase the performance of SATA-based storage without impacting capacity.

Anandtech has additional chipset details and a breakdown of the rather confusing way Intel's 8th generation CPUs are split between 14nm+, 14nm++, and an as-yet-unknown 10nm refresh from Cannon Lake. Finally, there are new hexa-core Xeon E processors, which are also 45W.

Intel also introduced some new designations, including Core i5+, Core i7+, and Core i9+, as shown above. Optane is a new technology that Intel unveiled at CES, which is created to boost HHD data speeds.
