Knicks fire Jeff Hornacek after two seasons as playoff drought continues

13 April 2018

The Knicks won 110-98 in Cleveland in Hornacek's final game, with President Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry delivering the news afterward. "We sincerely appreciate his efforts and considerable contributions to the team and wish him well in his future endeavors".

The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "We thank him for his dedication to NY and wish him the best moving forward". From Wright's perspective, it would be unquestionably lucrative to jump to the Knicks (with his stock never higher than it is today) and, if things went well, he could own the city of NY.

One rumbling of interest isn't enough to bring the Knicks and Wright together but it is unquestionably interesting that this report exists.

It bears mentioning that Cleveland hired Blatt to develop what they thought would be a young core of players (Andrew Wiggins, Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson) - could he finally get that chance to develop a young team centered around Kristaps Porzingis with the Knicks?

The Knicks are seriously aiming the free agent market in the summer of 2019 when they will have significant salary-cap space and Porzingis back to full strength.

There are several names being floated around as potential candidates, including former Memphis Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale, ex-Cavs coach David Blatt and former Knick Mark Jackson.

Stackhouse is now head coach of the Raptors' affiliate in the G League.

Apparently, the New York Rangers aren't the only tenant at Madison Square Garden without a head coach these days. Jackson was largely responsible for the success of the team and was inexplicably let go after a 50 win season with the then up-and-coming roster.

NY defeated the Cavaliers 108-95 earlier Wednesday. In Hornacek's first season in New York, Jackson requested that Hornacek blend elements of the triangle offense with what the coach preferred to run. The Knicks finished this season 29-53, good for 11th place in the Eastern Conference. They are out of the playoffs for the fifth season in a row, and they own just one playoff series victory in the past 18 years.
