Prince Philip in 'good spirits' after hip surgery

The Palace said Prince Philip was "comfortable and in good spirits" and is "progressing satisfactorily at this early stage".

He has been absent from a number of events in recent weeks including Sunday's Easter service at Windsor Castle, which was attended by the Queen.

The duke stepped down from his public duties last summer, but on occasion does attend events with the Queen.

While Prince Philip has been in a fairly healthy condition throughout his life, he had been reportedly treated for a blocked coronary artery in 2011, and a bladder infection in 2012.

There's a busy few months coming up for the royal family, as the Duke and Cambridge prepare to welcome their third child, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marry next month. When it was announced previous year that he would be retiring from official engagements, Buckingham Palace stressed that the decision was not health-related and that he had the full support of the Queen.

In June 2013 he spent 11 nights at the London Clinic, another private hospital in central London, where he underwent exploratory abdominal surgery.
