The army said almost 110 missiles hit targets in the capital Damascus and other areas, and air defence systems brought a lot of them down.
Mr. Trump ordered the airstrikes in response to Syria's chemical-weapons attack last weekend in the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma, which killed dozens of civilians, including children.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau said the country supports the decision "to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".

"Major combat operations in Iraq have ended", Bush said at the time, standing before a large banner reading "Mission Accomplished".
In his televised address, Trump said, "The goal of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons".
"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", he said, thanking the United Kingdom and France for joining the U.S. in its fight against the Syrian regime.

Following the announcement, the United States said strikes had been launched at 9pm EST (2am BST) and had destroyed important infrastructure at three sites connected to the Syrian regime's chemical weapons programme. "It is not about regime change", she said.
Trump said the operation would be conducted in cooperation with the militaries of France and Britain. Russian Ambassador to US Anatoly Antonov in a statement said, "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris".
Facilities still remain operational with the capability to contribute to continued development of chemical weapons, but the USA military insist a "severe blow" has been dealt.
Syria said the US, French, and British strikes were an attempt to "hinder the mission's work". The U.S. -Russia communication line, called a deconfliction channel, has been active since the strikes, officials said.
Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking Assad, who is also supported by Iran, and says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma, a town near Damascus which had been held by rebels until this month.
