There was an Ebola outbreak in 2014 in West Africa which killed 11,000 people - mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. All of those could be traced back to Ikoko Impenge, about 60 km away from Bikoro, except for one from the next door hamlet of Pangi.

Eight people died, including Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevo, who first attended to Mr Sawyer and helped to ensure a more devastating outbreak was avoided in Nigeria. Victims often die of shock but symptoms can be vague, including fever, muscle pain, diarrhoea and nausea.
