Donald Trump 'can take the Nobel prize'; South Korean President

01 May 2018

The US has never been so close to getting rid of North Korean nuclear weapons, President Donald Trump has said, exuding confidence that his planned summit with the North's leader, Kim Jong Un, will go ahead. "If it's not a success - you got to get rid of the nuclear weapons - if it's not a success, I will respectfully leave".

For the Trump-Kim summit, a couple of countries have been mentioned, including Singapore and Mongolia.

The suggestion comes on the heels of Moon's landmark summit with current North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday, at which the two pledged to end hostilities between their countries and work toward the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula. "Just asking!" he wrote.

Kim last month made his first visit to Beijing since taking power six years ago, kicking off a flurry of diplomacy highlighted by his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week.

Both South Korea and the United States say they share the goal of forcing North Korea to abandon its nuclear arms, and the Trump administration says there will be no reduction in pressure on Pyongyang until it has completely denuclearized. "They want to be the Switzerland of Asia, they want to be seen as a partner that can have good ties with everybody", Gibson said.

"Trump really is the first USA president to enforce sanctions against North Korea in a meaningful way", he said. Kim Jong Un, who has been very open and very straightforward so far - I can only say, again, so far.

If the Trump-Kim meet does happen then it would be the first U.S.

"If we were to witness a permanent peace on the Korean peninsula, and a denuclearised Korean peninsula, that would be an extraordinary outcome and would be deserving of the highest praise", she said.

The upcoming Trump-Kim meeting was the main subject of a private walk and chat that Kim and Mr Moon held during their meeting at the border, the official said.

Trump's supporters erupted in chants of "Nobel, Nobel, Nobel" at a rally in MI as he lashed out at news organizations, which he said were not giving him sufficient credit for bringing Kim to the negotiating table.

Trump is also expected to decide within days whether to pull the USA out of a nuclear accord with Iran.

Trump cited that prospect with approval on Monday, saying Kim is "talking about no research, no launches of ballistic missiles, no nuclear testing".

Trump's seemingly conciliatory tone toward the North Korean dictator stands in stark contrast to Trump's comments previous year about the country's nuclear tests in which he called Kim Jong Un "rocket man".

According to the BBC, the speakers would play "weather reports - making it a useful thing for Northern soldiers to listen to - news from both Koreas and overseas (which won't otherwise be heard over the border), dramas, favorable discussion of democracy, capitalism and life in South Korea, and less favorable comments on corruption and mismanagement in the North".

Moon said the government should make all necessary efforts for the successful DPRK-U.S. summit, which is forecast to be held in May or early June.
