Film mogul Weinstein appears handcuffed in court to face rape charges

He was processed at the station house, the First Police Precinct, and arraigned in a a NY court on charges of first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case, and first-degree criminal sex act in another, law enforcement officials said.

In October 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported that dozens of women had come forward accusing Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse.

Witnesses said Weinstein appeared pale and stared into space while prosecutors outlined the bail agreement.

Shortly afterwards Weinstein slipped out a rear entrance of the court as his attorney Benjamin Brafman came to the front to address reporters.

"The charges will not be believed by 12 people, assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case", he said.

Sivan believes Weinstein's arrest will impact the way sexual harassment is viewed in society.

In a statement published by the Hollywood Reporter, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said that Friday's charges, "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", adding, "I thank the fearless survivors who have come forward, and my office's prosecutors who have worked tirelessly on this investigation".

According to the Times' Ben Mueller, one of the two women cited in the charges is actress Lucia Evans, who told her story to journalist Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker previous year. Evans said that Weinstein forced her into oral sex back in 2004 but she has not made a public statement regarding the issue.

Police in Los Angeles and London have also been investigating reports filed against Weinstein by multiple women.

It's been almost eight months since accusations of rape, sex assault and harassment first surfaced against the 66-year-old Weinstein.

Actress and director Asia Argento, who said Weinstein raped her at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, tweeted simply: "What took you so long Harvey?" Women and a few men have publicly accused powerful men in business, government and entertainment of unwanted sexual behavior or sexual abuse.

The Reuters news agency said the rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified.

Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex. Numerous women have said they felt cornered, with some describing how they were simply too afraid to say no, terrified of being shunned from Hollywood all together.

"I hope this gives hope to victims and survivors everywhere, that we are one step closer to justice".

Allegations against Weinstein were presented to D.A. Vance's office previously in 2015, when model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez told police that the producer had allegedly groped her.
