But it's proving to be a bewildering display.

He said that despite Mr Trump's openness to sit down with special counsel Robert Mueller in the Russian Federation investigation, he would strongly advise the president against it.

"I firmly believe there is going to be too much evidence of wrongdoing by him and those around him for him to be able to survive the balance of his term", Avenatti said. "It would be a conflict right now for him to be the president's attorney", he told ABC.

"How could I ever be confident of that?" he said.

During a 2016 campaign rally, Trump disparaged staffers of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, for asserting their constitutional right against self-incrimination during a congressional investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server.

Trump said Friday he would "love" to speak with Mueller but only if he's treated fairly. "If you're innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?"

During a Fox News interview earlier in the week, Giuliani did link the payment to the presidential campaign and acknowledged for the first time that Trump was aware of the payment.

Protesters gather in Russia before Vladimir Putin's inauguration
Among those arrested was protest organiser Alexei Navalny , the anti-corruption campaigner who is Mr Putin's most prominent foe. The authorities regard most of the protests as illegal, arguing that their time and place was not agreed with them beforehand.

Mr Giuliani's aggressive defence recent weeks has pleased Mr Trump, though it exasperated White House aides and attorneys and left even supporters questioning his tactics.

He said that he and Jay Sekulow, another lawyer for Trump, were in agreement that the president should avoid speaking with Mueller.

"I don't know when the President learned about it", Giuliani said.

Norman Eisen, ethics chief under Trump's predecessor, Democrat Barack Obama, said any such payments would have constituted campaign contributions if they were meant to influence the election, even if they were also made with the "partial motive of protecting the Trump family from embarrassment".

"He's the president of the United States", Giuliani said.

"They did not cross my desk as campaign manager", Conway said of other potential payments. "I hope we get a chance to tell him the risk that he's taking", Giuliani said.

Then Daniels got brought into the party line of calls as well. "Everyone knows it's just an act", Baldwin said as Trump.

"I can't prove that".

"I have no knowledge of that", Giuliani said.

Trump has denied allegations from Daniels, a porn star whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, that they had an affair in 2006.

Avenatti stated later in response to Giuliani, "I feel it's apparent, George, to the American those who it is a cover-up, that [Trump's team members] are making it up as they go alongside".

Legal experts have said the revelation that Trump reimbursed Cohen raises new questions, including whether the money represented repayment of an undisclosed loan or could be seen as reimbursement for a campaign expenditure.

States Sue Trump Administration Over Plans to Weaken Emissions Standards
Xavier Becerra announced that they have filed the state's 10th, and potentially most consequential, lawsuit against the U.S. Becerra said the standards set in 2012 are "achievable, science-based and a boon for hardworking American families".
