Harvey Weinstein's attorney says he is 'lonely and angry'

Actress Rose McGowan, who accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, applauded the arrest of the Hollywood media mogul in NY on Friday.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office said he was charged with rape in the first and third degrees, stemming from an attack on a woman in 2013, and a criminal sex act against another woman in 2004.

Weinstein, in his first public appearance since October, faced a NY court on Friday after being charged with two counts of rape and one count of a criminal sexual act for alleged incidents involving two separate women. His bail was set at $1 million and he has to wear an electronic monitor.

His lawyer Benjamin Brafman said outside court that Weinstein meant to plead not guilty to the charges.

He stepped out of a black SUV, clutching several books, among them what appeared to be the Rodgers and Hammerstein biography "Something Wonderful" and a book on director Elia Kazan, and looked glum as he walked up the steps into the station.

Weinstein also surrendered his passport and agreed to stay within the states of NY and CT.

"This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually", prosecutor Joan Illuzzi said at Weinstein's arraignment on Friday in Manhattan Criminal Court. The case has been adjourned until July 30.

Harvey Weinstein's attorney described his client as "lonely and angry" before the disgraced film producer was charged with rape.

The other case involves allegations by Lucia Evans, a former aspiring actress who told the New Yorker that Weinstein forced her to give him oral sex in 2004, the Times reported.

NY police previously confirmed another credible rape allegation after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused the former producer of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.

London's Metropolitan Police have said they are also investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Weinstein, while prosecutors in Los Angeles said in February they were reviewing three accusations of sexual assault against him. More than 90 women have since come forward with additional allegations.

The news of Weinstein's surrender, which was tipped Thursday, has been a moment of vindication and catharsis for the #MeToo movement and especially the more than 80 women who have come forward to accuse the Oscar-winning producer of alleged sexual harassment and abuse over the decades. A few, including Asia Argento and Rose McGowan, said they were raped.

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", McGowan told ABC television.

McGowan further said she doesn't "ever want to see him again" and that she doesn't want to forgive him.

One of Brafman's past clients, former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, ultimately escaped criminal prosecution for alleged sexual assault in 2011.
