Firefighters went door-to-door asking residents of Leilani Estates on the island to leave as lava from the volcano continued to flow, threatening more homes, reported CNN.
The USGS warned that magma was still flowing into the rift zone.
The Hawaii Volcano Observatory announced the development on Sunday morning.
Satellite imagery and analytics firm DigitalGlobe, a Maxar company, directed its cameras over a large portion of the lava flow on May 23, including a close up of the imperiled Puna Geothermal power plant. The volcano began erupting on May 3, and since then at least 20 lava fissures have opened up.

Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano has spewed lava from about two dozen fissures for more than three weeks, and hundreds have been chased by their homes by the lava flows on the Big Island.
Three weeks into the volcano's eruption, scientists said the summit is still too unsafe to survey on foot.
The new fissure sent lava gushing into the evacuated Leilani Estates district in the eastern corner of Hawaii's Big Island.
The lava breached the property overnight.
Film mogul Weinstein appears handcuffed in court to face rape charges
Evans said that Weinstein forced her into oral sex back in 2004 but she has not made a public statement regarding the issue. Police in Los Angeles and London have also been investigating reports filed against Weinstein by multiple women.
"I never got to. walk in my house one last time", she said, on her family's GoFundMe page, which had been started to help offset evacuation costs.
"Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible". About 2,000 people have fled their homes. That lava flow has stopped on the property so there is no risk, for now, to the other nine wells.
Halema'uma'u lava lake, Kilauea volcano.
Scientists believe the volcanic activity may be a precursor to a major eruption similar to the one that shook the island in the mid-1920s.
Iran demands assurances after United States pullout from nuclear accord
He said that in theory the deal could survive without the United States , but acknowledged "in practice I'm not sure". The deal's proponents say it is crucial to forestalling a nuclear Iran and preventing wider war in the Middle East.
The plant's spokesman Mike Kaleikini was quoted as saying that no release of hydrogen sulfide had been detected on the site so far, which is the biggest concern if lava were to hit the geothermal wells.
