Hundreds of thousands remain without power after deadly storm pounds US Northeast

In Pennsylvania, a man was also killed as a result of the storm after a tree fell on a vehicle in the Poconos, WNEP-TV reported.

The severe threat is over for now, but a risk of flooding remains.

"The flood concern going forward looks to be from Virginia up into Southern New Jersey where rainfall amounts could be 4-8 inches over the coming days with localized amounts exceeding 10 inches", CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

Local news showed footage of trees resting on top of crushed cars and houses, vehicles submerged in water and residents handling large hail, some the size of tennis balls.

As of Wednesday morning, hundreds of thousands of customers remained without power in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

At the height of the storm, 122,000 homes in CT were without power.

According to police, upon arrival, a 41-year-old female operator from New Fairfield was found to have sustained fatal injuries due to the impact of the tree. Her 3-year-old passenger did not appear to be injured. Two people were fatally struck by falling trees in CT; two others were fatally struck by trees in Newburgh, in Orange County, where an 11-year-old girl died after a tree fell on her outside her home, ABC 7 reports. Two other people were killed in CT in separate incidents when trees fell on their vehicles, local media reported.
