A 5-year-old Colorado girl attacked by a black bear outside her home over the weekend was expected to recover thanks to the quick thinking of her mother, who scared the animal away, officials said Monday.

The child had gone outside of her home in East Orchard Mesa in the early morning hours after hearing noises she thought were coming from a dog, her mother told authorities.

The mom began to scream - and the bear dropped the girl and escaped.

She was listed in fair condition in the afternoon but chief operating officer Bryan Johnson says her family didn't want to release any more information.

The bear will be euthanized if caught, and then sent to Fort Collins facility for necropsy.
