'Murdered' Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko appears at press conference

Babchenko appeared at a news conference and thanked all those who had been mourning his death.

"According to information received by the Ukrainian security service, the killing of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko was ordered by the Russian security services themselves", Grytsak said, according to the Telegraph.

Babchenko fought with the Russian army in Chechnya in the 1990s and went on to cover conflicts in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia and Ukraine before leaving Moscow after a campaign of harassment previous year. They released today a sketch of the suspected killer, an unnamed bearded man between 40 and 45 years old.

The Ukrainian president's office referred reporters on Wednesday to comments by Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, who said it was too early to draw conclusions but that there was "an astounding similarity to the methods Russian Federation uses to provoke political destabilisation".

Babchenko was widely respected in Russian Federation and Ukraine's journalistic communities as an unblinking and remarkably talented chronicler of war. Some called for Babchenko to be stripped of his Russian citizenship.

Authorities in Ukraine are still investigating the killing of journalist Pavel Sheremet in a car-bomb blast in central Kyiv in July 2016.

"I used to be a good soldier", Babchenko wrote in 2017.
