"We have taken the decision to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, with the conviction that this decision will be extraordinarily positive for the future of our country", read an official statement from the government in Santo Domingo.

China's Vice President Wang Qishan shakes hand with Dominican Republic's Chancellor Miguel Vargas at the Zhongnanhai Leadership Compound in Beijing, China May 1, 2018. He said such moves only served to "drive a wedge between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait".

MOFA will call off all the cooperative projects and assistance run by Taiwan's officials and technical teams in the Dominican Republic, and the closure of the country's embassy will be determined later, according to the minister.

"(Taiwan) strongly condemns China's objectionable decision to use dollar diplomacy to convert Taiwan's diplomatic allies.

According to the communique, the People's Republic of China and the Dominican Republic, in keeping with the interests and desire of the two peoples, have made a decision to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level effective from the date of signature of the communique. Panama cut its diplomatic ties in favour of Beijing in June previous year.

Trump is also expected to decide within days whether to pull the USA out of a nuclear accord with Iran. For the Trump-Kim summit, a couple of countries have been mentioned, including Singapore and Mongolia.

"The government will not bow to Beijing's pressure, but will make every effort to safeguard the nation's interests, to defend the sovereignty and dignity of the ROC, and to work with friends in worldwide community to ensure regional peace and stability", it said.

"In response to the changing situation, Taiwan's military has also increased its combat readiness", Yen said.

The Dominican Republic started its commercial and political contacts with China in the middle of the last decade.

"This important and correct decision by the Dominican Republic absolutely accords with the basic interests of the country and its people", Wang said.

The move reduces to 19 the number of countries that recognize the government in Taipei, rather than Beijing - the latest success in China's effort to squeeze Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Speaking in March, Wang said it was in the best interests of Taiwan's few remaining diplomatic allies to recognize an "irresistible trend" and ditch Taipei in favor "one China" ruled by Beijing.

The head of Taiwan's Defense Ministry told lawmakers on Monday that US M1A2 Abrams tanks will be required to defend the island in the event of a conflict with China.

The new diplomatic partners praised the economic significance of the agreement.

The M1A2 Abrams tanks are said to be high on the Taiwanese Defense Ministry's wish list as a line of last defense in a conflict with mainland China, the South China Morning Post reported Monday.

Beijing has increasingly engaged in this tactic as well.

Pompeo: NATO 'more indispensable than ever' in light of Russian Federation threat
Friday's meeting will be the last such ministerial meeting to be held in the former Brussels NATO headquarters. That commitment was made in 2014 and thus far only six of the 28 countries who made the pledge meet the goal.

Beijing's actions have "unilaterally undermined the peaceful status quo across the strait and are not what a responsible member of the worldwide community should be doing", the statement said. The island is excluded from the United Nations and other multinational bodies that require official governmental recognition at China's insistence.
