Critics believe the US president's motivation for pardoning these particular public figures is to send a message to the US Department of Justice and the FBI amid as Robert Mueller continues special counsel investigation.

President Donald Trump indicated Thursday morning he could decide soon whether or not to commute the prison sentence of former IL governor Rod Blagojevich.

Some fellow conservatives, however, cheered Trump's move, including Sen.

Trump has granted five pardons since taking office including to Joe Arpaio, a Trump supporter who was convicted of contempt of court for racially profiling Hispanics while serving as a sheriff in Arizona. That law made it illegal to transport women across state lines for "immoral purposes". Trump said on Twitter.

During an interview with syndicated talk show host Laura Ingraham on Thursday after Trump announced the pardon, D'Souza characterized prosecutors in the case as a "team of goons" who gave him a disproportionate sentence.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump pardoned shrill right-wing author Dinesh D'Souza and also said he is considering commuting Blagojevich's 14-year sentence and pardoning Martha Stewart. Trump didn't elaborate on how the government had wronged D'Souza, who admitted that he had close associates contribute $10,000 to New York Republican Wendy Long's campaign for the Senate.

D'Souza pleaded guilty to attempting to donate $20,000 to a Senate campaign through straw donors.

In D'Souza's case, diGenova said, the president had good cause.

After being charged, D'Souza and his lawyer accused the government of having "selectively targeted" him because of "his outspoken, vigorous and politically controversial criticism and condemnation'" of Obama and his administration. "If you read his statement it was a foolish statement there was a lot of bravado ... but it does not ... plenty of other politicians have said a lot worse".

Setting the new case apart from the others: D'Souza had actually pleaded guilty to the charges against him ― making his pardon, say Trump critics, a clear sign to the handful of former Trump aides who have pleaded guilty in the Russian Federation probe and are now cooperating with Mueller's team.

D'Souza thanked those who urged Trump to pardon him, and took a swipe at Preet Bharara, the US attorney who prosecuted him.

A senior White House official said as many as a dozen other pardons are under consideration by Trump, adding that most are likely to happen.

Trump noted that even though Blagojevich was Democrat, "He's not my party".
