Paul George to televise free agency on ESPN

28 June 2018

With free agency approaching on July 1, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly attempting to trade for Kawhi Leonard before LeBron James makes a decision on his player option for the 2018-19 National Basketball Association season.

While the Lakers had once seemed like a front-runner for Leonard, a Los Angeles native, once he hit free agency, that was also previously the case with George.

According to a previous report, the Lakers were stonewalled in earlier discussions with the Spurs, who have fielded offers from Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and LA Clippers, per the ESPN article. It means the Celtics would have to include a group of players just to fit Leonard's $20.1 million 2018-19 salary into the team. All of those players have their own major decisions to make, although Leonard's situation is the most complex, because he is still under contract with the Spurs for one more season.

"LeBron has more than earned the right to approach his contracts the way he does", Altman said.

A Harley-Davidson spokesman said the company had nothing to say in response to Trump's tweet beyond its filing with the U.S. Harley-Davidson now has overseas manufacturing plants in Brazil, India and Australia and is building a plant in Thailand .

Wojnarowski followed that up by noting the Los Angeles native wants to play in his hometown, preferably for the Lakers.

Previous information indicated that the Spurs had shut down their initial trade talks with the Lakers, and further reports surfaced saying that San Antonio wouldn't even trade Leonard to a Western Conference team. That could drive up the price for Leonard, an unusual scenario for a player so close to free agency (and coming off an injury that cost him 73 games last season). When Irving first told the Cavaliers he wanted a trade, he gave them a list of four preferred spots: the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat. The agent reasoned that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich only wants to compete for championships, and keeping Leonard helps him accomplish that, regardless of Leonard's wishes. The Celtics have always made their future the priority, so the only way they should seriously be considering Leonard is if it is on the kind of value that another team will be able to top.

It is true that the Spurs have no leverage whatsoever, because the sense is that Leonard is not going to play for them again.
