Manafort Judge: The Jail Handles 'Terrorists, Spies and Traitors'

13 July 2018

A mug shot of Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign manager, was released Thursday after he was transferred to another holding facility, according to a report.

Manafort is scheduled for trial on July 25 on charges arising from work he performed for pro-Russia Ukrainian interests.

"Contrary to Manafort's assertions about his jail conditions, Manafort is in a private unit in which he can review materials and prepare for trial", Mueller's prosecutors wrote in a court filing.

The conditions under which he's being held are considered standard for numerous high-profile inmates housed in the jail's VIP section because of security concerns.

The judge in that case, Amy Berman Jackson, ordered Manafort to be jailed last month after he was accused of attempting to convince potential witnesses to lie on the stand.

But Judge Ellis denied a motion to head off the transfer.

Mueller argued today that the revocation of Manafort's bail has not been "unduly interfering with his ability to prepare for trial", especially as his living circumstances are "in various ways less restrictive" than for other inmates.

Donald Trump's former campaign chairman had requested that his trial for bank fraud be pushed back to the fall because he's not able to adequately prepare from jail in Warsaw, Virginia.

The Heat's interest in Anthony seems to indicate their confidence in his ability to regain his form as an elite shooter. If he joined the Heat, he could slot in at power forward in a frontcourt with Hassan Whiteside and Josh Richardson.

Government lawyers reported Manafort had over 100 phone calls with his attorneys in the past three weeks.

Manafort, who was assigned an extra-large cell, also has access to a separate workroom at the jail to meet with his attorneys from 8:30 a.m.to 10:00 p.m., and visitor logs from the prison show that each week Manafort has had multiple visits with his legal team, according to Mueller's filing.

In response, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III ordered Manafort moved from his current jail to one in Alexandria where the federal courthouse is located, so he could be closer to his lawyers. They said Mueller's team "does not pause to consider the reasons a detained defendant might have to make his situation sound better when speaking with concerned friends and family".

Last week, Manafort's lawyers complained that he has to spend 23 hours in solitary confinement in the unit. Now, Manafort's team wants the trial delayed by months and moved from the Beltway to Roanoke, Va., arguing there are too many Hillary Clinton voters in Alexandria, Va., to put together an impartial jury.
