Many people speculate that this is being caused by the recent update to RCS profile rolled out by T-Mobile.

It is believed the bug could be due to a new messaging standard called RCS, which is created to make texting look more like a messaging app, complete with read receipts and typing indicators. The user pointed out that the issue was do with the Samsung default SMS app being updated from the Galaxy Store.
