Trump to Appoint Extreme Ideologue to the Supreme Court

10 July 2018

After less than two weeks of deliberations, Trump is set to announce Monday at 9 p.m. EDT his nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, a choice that could well affect the court, and Americans' constitutional rights, for a generation.

The White House has prepared promotional material on all four prospective nominees, and Trump has reportedly spent the weekend discussing his options with top aides and friends, including Fox News host Sean Hannity, over golf at his company's club in New Jersey.

That was the message Monday from a quartet of red-state Democratic senators after the White House invited them to the East Room for President Trump's unveiling of his Supreme Court nominee. As an attorney, Kavanaugh worked for the special counsel investigating former President Bill Clinton, who was eventually impeached, and also worked for the Bush campaign during the 2000 presidential election recount. Gorsuch, Trump's first pick, is 50.

Republicans control the Senate by a 51-49 majority, making any efforts by Democrats to thwart Trump's nominee an uphill battle.

Former champion Venus crashes out of Wimbledon in third round
Serena Williams , the seven-time Wimbledon victor , is seeded 25th after her tentative return from the birth of her first child. The 36-year-old American now can not meet a top 32 player until the semi-finals after the scattering of the seeds this week.

Trump is said to have apparently lost interest in Kethledge. He was a runner-up previous year when Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

"Remember, the President ran on the Supreme Court issue and that greatly enthused voters", Leonard Leo, who is now on leave from the Federalist Society, where he helped craft Trump's list of candidates, said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. Leonard Leo, the vice president of the conservative Federalist Society who selected Trump's longlist of 25 candidates for the supreme court, told ABC's This Week that warnings about Roe v Wade were a "scare tactic". She pointed to the confirmation process of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993 in which she said that all women should be afforded the right to privacy to make their own decision. The New York Times reported Sunday that Trump found Kethledge a little tiresome and anxious about his record on immigration.

Kethledge, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, is a former Kennedy clerk and a former in-house lawyer at Ford Motor Co.

During her nomination hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Barrett was questioned about her religious beliefs. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, is absent getting cancer treatment, so Republicans now have just a 50-49 vote hold.

The next race will be held at Silverstone on July 8, 2018. 'Everyone in the team will feel a nervousness. I hope it is not a title decider, but I can't predict what is happening going forward.

David Lat: Judge Hardiman is a judge for the 3rd Circuit based out of Pittsburgh and I think there are several things the president likes about him. The President's hardline policy approach means the issue could well end up before the court soon. He recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to get an abortion. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee.

They include Judge Raymond Kethledge, 51, who sits on the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals, who would puncture the Ivy League aura that cloaks the Supreme Court since he studied law at the University of MI and not Harvard or Yale.

"I don't think anyone should expect me to simply vote yes for this nominee, just simply because my state may be more conservative than others", Jones said.

The president has also said previously to reporters that he has narrowed the pool, saying on Thursday "of the four people, I have it down to three or two".
