Rick Gates' trustworthiness questioned in Paul Manafort trial

10 August 2018

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III regrets how he's treated special counsel Robert Mueller's prosecutors throughout the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

The judge's comments and detailed testimony about Manafort's loans came during the eighth day of his trial as prosecutors began presenting the bulk of their bank fraud case against him after spending days largely on tax-evasion allegations. In the filing, they argued that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch.

Gates testified that Manafort asked him to float Calk, who was on Trump's economic advisory council, for Secretary of the Army.

Gates testified Tuesday that he and Manafort engaged a law firm in Cyprus - and its director, "Doctor K" - to help hide millions of dollars they received for their work in Ukraine. "I'm here", Gates responded. That, Downing said, would invalidate his plea deal.

Another witness, Citizens Bank Vice President Peggy Miceli, said Manafort would not have gotten the $3.4 million loan if the bank had known it was a rental property. And the fact that after loaning Manafort millions of dollars Calk became an economic adviser to Trump casts doubt on Trump's famous pledge to "drain the swamp" and puncture the rampant influence peddling in Washington. Gates testified that he had an extramarital affair a decade ago, and also that he embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort.

Gates, Manafort's right-hand man in the consulting business and in the Trump campaign, acknowledged Tuesday that he had an affair aided by money he stole from his boss and that he rented an apartment in London for two months. Prosecutors allege Manafort used various ways to hide his income, including wiring money from Ukraine to the United States via a bank in Cyprus and listing it as a loan, and laundering almost $1 million through the purchases of Oriental rugs. Downing asked Gates if he recalled telling the special counsel's office that he'd had four different extramarital affairs.

Tuchel Offers "No Comment" On Kante Speculation
A move to England would have to materialise in the next few days, as the Premier League transfer window closes on August 9. Paris Saint-Germain head coach Thomas Tuchel declined to comment on links with Chelsea and France midfielder N'Golo Kante.

More broadly, this trial is a direct result of the special counsel's investigation into the Trump's campaign contacts with Russian Federation.

Prosecutors sought to soften the blow of the cross-examination by asking Gates to acknowledge his own crimes, including a lie to Mueller's team in February.

In an email shown to the jury, Manafort, the former campaign chairman for President Donald Trump, wrote to Gates on November 24, 2016, "We need to discuss Steve Calk for Sec of Army".

Laporta said Manafort provided no documentation to back up the claim.

Ellis even took aim at journalists, threatening on Monday to kick reporters out of the courtroom if they continue being "disruptive". "You said you had a made mistake", the lawyer said.

Ellis and Andres continued to butt heads Wednesday, after Ellis once again reminded the prosecutors they should wrap their case quickly.

Trump made his preference clear for Kobach. "That was not good", the president tweeted . "VOTE TUESDAY!" Trump tweeted. Although the race was still too close to call, Mr Trump claimed victory and took credit for the Republican's success.

When Yanukovych lost power, Gates testified that "decreased the income stream" significantly for Manafort, and his financial situation "substantially decreased" from prior years.

Gates, 46, is expected to be cross-examined for about another hour by Manafort's attorney Kevin Downing before prosecutors get a second chance to try and undo some of the possibly damaging testimony he gave during their redirect.

Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant Morgan Magionos brought Manafort's fashion tastes back to the spotlight.

But on Wednesday, Downing suggested that Gates had withheld the extent of his philandering from prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant, has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank fraud, tax fraud and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts. Gates also provided the first witness testimony that overlaps with Trump's presidential campaign.

For this Manafort was paid US$4million a year, in quarterly payments of US$1million, Gates recalled, though at some point the currency switched from USA dollars to Euros.

But he did admit the police department and city could do better. "Our souls are burdened", Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. It's very rare we actually witness this stuff. "Somebody knows who did it", said Johnson, his voice rising.
