McCain's office released a statement Saturday afternoon confirming his passing: "Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018".

His death comes a day after his family announced he had stopped treatment for the aggressive illness.

Earlier this year, when John McCain crafted a memoir that was understood to be his final testament, he began a sentence with an ominous transition phrase: "Before I leave".

Eventually, he recovered from injuries and infection, only to spend two years in solitary confinement, where he used codes to communicate with other prisoners.

Before serving in Congress, McCain served in the U.S. Navy.

McCain moved to Arizona later in life in 1981.

From there, he headed to Pensacola, Florida, to be trained as a Navy pilot and continue the rowdy existence of his days at the academy.

McCain's death will leave a void in a Republican Party increasingly turning away from bipartisanship at home and engagement overseas in favour of the president's brand of divisiveness and isolationism.
