After upset win, Massachusetts Democrat comes out swinging at Trump

BOSTON-In a political stunner, incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano lost Tuesday's primary to Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councillor who is virtually assured of becoming the first black woman to serve MA in Congress.

Ms. Pressley becomes the second Democrat to.

Capuano conceded defeat to Pressley in the race to represent Massachusetts' 7th District approximately 90 minutes after the polls closed.

There is no Republican on the November ballot in the district, meaning Pressley is virtually assured of entering Congress in January.

It's not a sight you see every day, certainly not around Boston - a black woman mounting a plausible challenge to a 10-term white congressman from her own party, a politician with vast connections who votes the progressive line and opposes everything Trump.

Roger Federer defeats Nick Kyrgios to reach US Open fourth round
Kyrgios counters that is the only way he knows how to approach a match. "When he gets in front, there's not much you can do". Federer then bested the tricky Benoit Paire 7-5 6-4 6-4, in a performance that was more workman-like than it was clinical.

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE".

No Republican candidates filed for the race that Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates Solid Democratic.

"Our president is a racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man", Pressley told supporters on Tuesday night.

But she made her background a major part of the race, highlighting the importance of boosting diversity in the Democratic Party, talking about her own experience with sexual assault, and regularly calling for more "bold, activist leadership".

During the campaign, Capuano touted his credentials as an "unabashed liberal", but he found himself competing with Pressley over who was the more progressive candidate.

It also believes that a Pakistani crackdown could be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the long-running war in Afghanistan. This time may be different, however, as new Khan has said he seeks "mutually beneficial" relations with the United States.

Capuano also had the backing of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and Massachusetts's first African-American governor, Deval Patrick.

Like Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's challenge to Rep. Joe Crowley, Ms. Pressley was looking to unseat a white male who'd represented for 20 years a district that was now mostly non-white.

Monteiro says as a woman raised by a single mother coming from a "tough neighbourhood", she can relate to Pressley "in so many ways".

Pressley called for defunding the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, which helped her draw support from Massachusetts' popular attorney general, Maura Healey, who's gained a national following for repeatedly suing President Donald Trump in an attempt to block his policies on immigration, gun control and other issues.
