Yes", West said. "It was a white, female Dallas police officer who shot and killed a person from St. Lucia of African descent. Jean said Friday in footage broadcast by Dallas' NBC affiliate, KXAS.

Guyger is accused of fatally shooting Jean in his apartment on Thursday (Sept. 6).

Amber Guyger, who is white, was off-duty when she shot Jean, a black man, after mistakenly entering his apartment at the complex where she also lived, police said Thursday.

Guyger is now on administrative leave and has yet to be arrested for killing 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, who was described by loved ones as warm, cheerful and loved to sing. She reported the shooting to dispatchers and she told officers who responded that she had mistaken Jean's apartment for her own.

Online records initially showed Guyger was in custody at the jail, but later she was not listed on the jail inmate roster.

Jean, who has held government posts in the island nation of St. Lucia, says her son's death "just feels like a nightmare". Hall did not say why the officer opened fire and declined to discuss what she may have been doing before she returned home after working a full shift Thursday. Jean was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Jean's mother shared stories with the mayor about her late son, "how he loved everybody", "how much he loved Dallas", "didn't really see color" and "always had a smile on his face", according to Rawlings.

She told authorities that she entered his apartment, which she thought was her own, and then shot the victim believing him to be an intruder. His uncle Ignatius Jean said the slaying left relatives devastated and looking for answers. The family asked that Jean be remembered as a youth pastor, singer and good friend and family member - and not as the focus of speculation or political agendas, the station reported.
