Gareth Southgate assesses England's defeat to Spain

10 September 2018

Luis Enrique won his first game in charge of Spain as La Roja came from behind to beat England 2-1 at Wembley in the Nations League.

Against England, Spain had far less possession than they were used to under World Cup caretaker coach Fernando Hierro and predecessors Julen Lopetegui and Vicente del Bosque but played with more goal and were more direct than before.

Luke Shaw plays for Manchester United.

Southgate is, sensibly, resisting the calls but is aware of the reality check of England losing to Spain.

"Going by numbers and performances, he is world's number one".

"I am really, really pleased they're making him the face because it shows people are standing up against rubbish". President Trump predicted Wednesday that Nike would suffer losses due to its decision to feature an NFL-kneeler.

On Sunday there were no plans to send Shaw back to his club early, as would've been the case had the head injury been more severe, although it would appear unlikely he will be risked against Switzerland on Tuesday in England's friendly at Leicester City's King Power Stadium. "I'm under contract, I'm enjoying the role, I love the challenge and that's it". "He scored a goal and he was in the penalty box more".

"We have got 19 matches, it's not very long, but, in my opinion, we have got the best group of players in the country here".

"We knew it was going to be a hard game".

"In the second half we knew how to cope under pressure and that's an important thing for us, that we stuck together in tough moments like in the second half".

Most notable was Gomez's forward passing, with the Liverpool defender showcasing a rare ability, or perhaps willingness, to play vertically rather than horizontally.

The system is expected to move little over the next few days and has a low chance of becoming a tropical storm. The storm is entirely unlikely to hit oil production or delivery terminals but it may have economic impacts.

"He may have mistakes like everybody else, but we have one of the best in the world. So, I think, on this occasion, that's the approach we have to take".

The game would end in defeat for England, who were deservedly beaten by their technically superior opponents.

When Ramos came over, he had warm welcomes of a slew of the coaching team but former Barcelona manager Enrique wasn't there for the greeting straight away.

Southgate also said it was "difficult to tell" if Shaw had lost consciousness on the pitch after the collision, adding: "We'll go through some tests".
